Jazz Band Headed to State!

The Moravia Jazz Band placed first in Class 1A at the Southeast Polk Jazz Festival on Saturday, February 11. Moravia was also awarded “Best Section” certificates for both their trombone and saxophone sections. Individual Certificates of Recognition for soloing were: Elizabeth Cremeens, bari sax: Matthew Seals, alto sax: Halley Kirkpatrick, trumpet: Kaylin McDanel, alto sax: and Carson Seals, trombone. Other bands in Class 1A included BGM, which placed second and received the “Best Section” certificates for their trumpets and rhythm sections. Earlham’s Jazz Band received third place.
Our Moravia Jazz Band played extremely well again and received many positive comments from the judges as well as things we can work on to further enhance our performance. I am VERY PROUD of this group and again, I am EXTREMELY excited to see how far this band will go!
Members of the 2022-2023 Moravia Jazz Band are: Adam Dueker, Charlie Hayworth, Tucker Selix, Luke McDanel, Parker Armstrong, Ivy Wubben, Kaylin McDanel, Matthew Seals, Katey Kirkpatrick, Jaime Self, Kjirsten Albertson, Elizabeth Cremeens, Adam Uhlenhake, Jacob Irving, D.J. Jackson, Carson Seals, Kaylen Robinson, Halley Kirkpatrick, Lincoln Albertson and Shelby Cremeens.
The ensemble’s set of music includes “One Note Samba” by Antonio Carlos Jobim, arranged by Paul Murtha, and featuring solo parts by Adam Dueker, Charlie Hayworth, Kjirsten Albertson, Kaylin McDanel, and Halley Kirkpatrick. Other selections are “The Next Chapter” by Patty Darling, which features Matthew Seals on the alto saxophone, and “I’m Beginning To See the Light” by Hodges, George, Ellington, and James, arranged by Paul Baker. That number includes solos by both Matthew and Carson Seals, as well as Elizabeth Cremeens.
The group will travel to Indianola High School on Saturday, February 18, where they will perform at 11:25 a.m. in the auditorium. The 1A Jazz Bands competing with Moravia will be BGM High School, performing at 11:50 and St. Edmond’s High School performing at 12:15. Class 1A awards will be held at 3:20 p.m. There is an admission charged by the host school.
